Bessie’s Squaw Bread

Print Friendly

My Grandmother and I used to make this when I was a child, it still brings back great memories.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 TBS sugar

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients and gradually pour in milk.  The dough will be sticky, thats ok.  Drop into vegetable oil that has been heated to 375 in a cast iron skillet – or if you don’t have one of those a heavy bottom pan.  You only need a couple inches of oil, it’s not like you are deep frying these.  Fry until golden brown, remove from oil, place on paper towel to drain and sprinkle with confectioners sugar, and/or cinnamon sugar.
